Examinations staff and candidates

Online exams

Exams taken on a computer: the question bank, building exams, sittings, the live monitor, marking and results for staff; checking your computer, the practice exam and taking the exam for candidates.

About 77 minutes in all18 short lessons

The first part of this course is for Examinations staff: everything is in the left menu under Examination and Registration → Examination → Online exams. The second part, from Your online exams, is for candidates: in the portal, under Registration → Online exams. Candidates who sit an online exam should do at least the lessons from Your online exams to the end.

  1. 1

    The question bank

Keep every online exam question in one bank: five question types, an optional picture, a paper, a topic and a difficulty.

    6 min
  2. 2

    Upload questions from Excel

Add many questions at once from a spreadsheet, using the blank template.

    4 min
  3. 3

    Build an online exam

Create an exam, add sections that draw questions from the bank for every candidate, and set the time, pass mark and what candidates see.

    7 min
  4. 4

    Exam security settings

Choose how strict the exam screen is: full screen, copying, the camera, one device, warnings and what happens when they run out.

    6 min
  5. 5

    Preview and publish an exam

Draw a sample paper the way a candidate would get it, then publish the exam so sittings can be scheduled.

    3 min
  6. 6

    Schedule a sitting

A sitting is one time window when candidates take a published exam, from home or at a venue with an access code.

    4 min
  7. 7

    Add candidates to a sitting

Add people one by one, bring in a whole licensure session, internship intake or indexing list, or upload a spreadsheet.

    5 min
  8. 8

    Watch a sitting live

Follow every candidate while they write: camera pictures, answers so far, time left and warnings, and act when something goes wrong.

    6 min
  9. 9

    Mark written answers

Mark the written answers by hand, question by question, without seeing whose answer it is.

    4 min
  10. 10

    Results and publishing

See every candidate’s score, download the list, and publish the results, which also go into the licensure results when the exam is linked.

    4 min
  11. 11

    How questions performed

After a sitting, see which questions were too easy, too hard, or may have the wrong answer marked.

    3 min
  12. 12

    Your online exams

Find the online exams the Council has booked you for, see when they open, and start or continue them.

    3 min
  13. 13

    Check my computer

Test your browser, screen, full screen, camera and internet connection before exam day.

    3 min
  14. 14

    The practice exam

Try a short practice exam (5 questions, 10 minutes) on the same screen and with the same rules as the real thing. It never counts.

    3 min
  15. 15

Before you start the real exam

Read the exam rules, agree to them, type the exam centre code if you are at a venue, show it’s you, and start.

    4 min
  16. 16

    Taking the exam

Answer the questions on the full-screen exam page: your answers save as you go, the clock is at the top, and you hand in when you finish.

    6 min
  17. 17

Warnings, the camera and one device

What counts as a warning, what happens when you run out, why the camera stays on, and what to do if your computer breaks.

    4 min
  18. 18

    Your online exam result

See your result once the Council publishes it, and review your answers if the exam allows it.
